 | Wilkes Woman Beaten in Home InvasionA man terrorized, then beat a Wilkes County woman at her Hays area home in the pre-dawn hours Sunday after demanding pills from the victim. The Wilkes Sheriff’s Department report says that Melissa Leann Higgins answered a knock at her door at about 4:30 Sunday morning, finding a white male there who asked to use her phone.

 | Murder Victim Dumped in Yancey, Two Arrested in McDowellA Saturday night murder lead to the Monday night arrest of two McDowell men after a Marion man’s body was recovered, dumped in a remote Yancey County location. The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that the body of Samuel Edward Effler, 37, of Marion, was found late Sunday on a remote gravel road in Yancey County but could not be recovered until yesterday morning.

 | UPDATE: Raleigh Man Killed in Echota Fall A man was killed late this morning at Echota in Foscoe after falling and hitting his head. The Watauga Sheriff’s Department identified the man as 52-year old Jefferson D. Morgan of Raleigh. Witnesses said Morgan and his wife were walking on the steep slope behind the south-facing units when the accident occurred.

 | UPDATE: Two Four-Wheeler Crashes, One Fatal Two four-wheeler accidents occurred within a short time frame Friday afternoon and evening—one fatal. Blowing Rock Rescue and Watauga Medics were called to the scene of the fatal accident on Sampson Road, the 6:30pm mishap due to the driver of the four-wheeler losing control, running off the road and overturning. The State Patrol identified the victim as 55-year old Robert Dudley Townsend of Laurel Fork Church Road.
