Today’s the day—ready or not. The dedication of the new Watauga High School. The event features Governor Bev Perdue and a number of other county and state dignitaries, school officials and more, with music provided by a band made up of the Watauga Community Band and grads of the Watauga High School Band. The event starts at 10, but with a large crowd expected, advice is to be there early. Traffic entering the school will use the east side entrance to Old East King Street as the side from the Boone side will be blocked off. See the earlier GBR article for the map to the site.

The stand-off is over—Walter Edmisten has surrendered to lawmen. The 50-year old was coaxed out of his home just off Wildcat Road by a family member, according to Sheriff Len Hagaman, "We're greatfully relieved. We're thankful for his family showing up. They, of course, played a very important role in it along with some of the negotiators, so he was ready to come out." Video at: http://www.youtube.com/user/GoBlueRidgeNews

The Watauga Sheriff's Department and Tactical Units from various surrounding agencies are waiting to take action to capture a suspect who fired at deputies trying to serve warrants this morning. Warrants include charges from the high-speed chase from earlier this week. The man had been tasered at the Wildcat Road house, but still managed to fire two shots at the lawmen, the second through a wall as deputies took cover. No injuries came from the shooting, but the waiting game goes on.
