Wreck Closes NC 18 Near Virginia Line A wreck has closed NC 18 in Alleghany County near the Virginia line. Victims are reportedly pinned in the wreckage of the vehicles involved and very serious injuries are reported. Capel Unveils 2010-11 Men’s Basketball ScheduleHighlighted by 12 home games and contests against four NCAA Tournament participants, Appalachian State University men’s basketball released its 2010-11 schedule on Wednesday.Following a November 4 exhibition against Lees-McRae, the Mountaineers open the season at Tulsa on Nov. 12, marking the third time in four seasons the Apps will open the year away from the Holmes Center. Appalachian returns home briefly to host Montreat in the home opener on Nov. 16. Following that game, the squad takes its longest road trip of the season to play six games spanning more than three weeks.

Smith Named to Butkus Award Watch List Appalachian State University linebacker D.J. Smith is one of 51 college football players — and the only one from the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS — formerly Division I-AA) — on the official watch list for the 2010 Butkus Award, which was announced on Tuesday. In its 26th year, the Butkus Award annually recognizes the nation’s top linebackers at the professional, collegiate and high-school levels.

Sex Assault, Robbery, B&E Convictions Overturned for Avery Man by Court of AppealsThe convictions of an Avery County man have been overturned by the North Carolina Court of Appeals this afternoon and he may soon be a free man. The three-judge panel issued their opinions in the case of Paul Brantley Lewis, convicted in a December 2001 sexual assault and break-in counts after a woman’s home was broken into by two men.
