SCAM ALERT: Avery Resident Skirts Scam

While paving scams have taken a hit thanks to the North Carolina Attorney General’s office, other scams are still finding victims in our area, causing a call for vigilance from Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye.  The Sheriff Forwarded a letter received by an Avery citizen this past week, complete with a valid-looking check for $4450 drawn on a US bank. Avery Arrests Sex Offender, Drug Suspect

The Avery Sheriff’s Department is reporting a couple of arrests, one of a man wanted elsewhere and residing in Avery, facing Avery charges as well.  Francis Sipala, 55, originally from Delaware but currently residing near Elk Park was arrested and charged with Felony Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. 'Gimpy' Crook Sought in Crime of the Week

Watauga County Crimestoppers and Boone Police seek the public’s assistance in solving the following crime:  On August 9th at approximately 4:00 p.m. the pictured individual took a lower leg brace from Boone Drug at Deerfield.  The man entered the store with a limp and went to the area of the store where leg braces are kept.  He then put one of the braces on and left the store without paying.

Former Town Manager Accused in Old Cannon Hospital Break-in and Theft

WSOC-TV reports that they have seen the warrants in the case that caused the town manager of Banner Elk to be fired, facing criminal charges.  According to the TV station, John Mejaski is accused of breaking into the old Cannon Memorial Hospital and stealing a walk-in freezer door, that after getting the arrest warrant in the case. UPDATE: Traffic Check Leads to Pot Bust

$30,000 worth of marijuana was found after a brief chase Saturday night, that after a motorcycle sped away from a law enforcement check-point in Foscoe.  Lawmen pursued the motorcycle, and after a brief chase, the suspect fled on foot.  Chasing the suspect, deputies discovered growing marijuana and harvested some 22 pounds of pot. UPDATE: 7-Year Old Boy Drowns in Boone Creek

Boone Police have identified the victim of a Friday night drowning in a local creek as 7-year-old Bryson Cox from Deep Gap.  Cox drowned in an incident Friday night after being swept downstream in a creek swollen by a thunderstorm's rains. At about 8:15, Boone 911 received a call about a child in distress at the Red Carpet Inn on Blowing Rock Road.  Boone Police, Fire, and Watauga Medics responded to the scene, finding from witnesses that the boy fell into the creek behind the motel, prompting a search of the waterway.

Platinum Paving Ordered to Cease Residential Work in NC

The NC Attorney General's office has won a court battle against Platinum Paving, a Tennessee firm under investigation with numerous allegations of targeting senior citizens in western North Carolina.  A temporary restraining order was issued in Wake Superior Court Friday by Judge Robert Hobgood, ordering the company to stop doing residential business in the state. The Attorney General’s  request granted for the temporary restraining order stops Platinum Paving and owner Todd E. Whittaker of Washington County, Tennessee from offering or performing any residential driveway paving services while the order remains in effect. Full Story
