Horn In The West Enters Final Weekend on Upswing Going into its final weekend of the season, Horn in the West is already looking back on a remarkable season. Despite the economy and the recent afternoon and evening storms, the local outdoor drama about the life and times of Daniel Boone is reporting a 5% increase in attendance over the 2009 figures.

Two Arrested for Possession of Stolen Vehicles Larry Greene (29) of Lenoir and Destiny Miller (22) also of Lenoir were both arrested and charged with two counts of possession of stolen vehicles. Avery County Sheriff’s deputies and NC Highway Patrol located Greene and Miller were located in the Linville/Montezuma area after SHP officer ran the tag on a truck Greene was driving and it came back stolen.

UPDATE: Two High Country Town Managers Charged, One DismissedThe complaint against Seven Devils Town Manager Harold Edward Evans Jr. was dismissed in Watauga District Court today, as the court found claims of a Greensboro man to be unfounded. Evans was accused by Kenneth Lee Canter of stealing realty signs, leading to Evans arrest on August first--the 57-year old charged with misdemeanor larceny.

Sales Tax Vote Starts Today Watauga voters can start casting ballots today in a referendum requested by the Watauga County Commission to add a quarter cent to the sales tax. Funds from the tax would be build new recreational facilities for the county, starting at the Old Watauga High location, according to County commission Chairman Jim Deal, then an eastern community center, then park facilities.

Day 1: Schools Open--Pictorial of the Day There were traffic back-ups, lost students, lost parents, but for the most part, schools in Watauga—and in Avery—got underway this morning. With many Watauga eyes watching the traffic flow for the new high school, lines backed up in both directions on 421 while DOT crews adjusted the new traffic light at 421 and Old East King Street—where all the high school traffic was funneled—trying to get the timing right. Vehicle Crashes into New River A vehicle crashed into the New River last night after careening off of NC 194 in Ashe County. The wreck occurred near the McNeil Road intersection just out of Warrensville just after 9 last night. 9-1-1 operators in Ashe apparently received a call from inside the car after it crashed into the river, getting location information over screams. The state patrol says there were injuries in the wreck, but other details have not been released. Full Story |
Hot Weather Could Shorten First School Day And with the opening of school, school system officials are going to be watching the thermostat today—with the option of shortening the day. With temps in mid-80’s expected today, and with 8 Watauga schools not air conditioned, School officials said they plan to open windows and doors early Wednesday morning to let in cool air from overnight before students arrive.

SCHOOLS OPEN!!!  There’s a new road in place, but the real hope is that timing will take care of a potential traffic snarl today as school opens in Watauga County—and opens a new era with students taking their first classes at the new Watauga High. Traffic on East King has been a problem since Hardin Park School opened years ago, and adding the new WHS would seem a likely nightmare.
