Watauga Sheriff’s Office warns of scam making the rounds again

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office would once again like to remind the public to be aware of scammers.

They have received several reports from the public regarding calls from people claiming to be a business. Usually they claim to be from a business that you would use or have used. They can even make it look like they are calling from this business. They will have information about you and/or services you have received.

The best way to keep yourself and your money safe is to know that NO LEGITIMATE BUSINESS WILL EVER ASK FOR PAYMENT VIA GIFT CARDS, BITCOIN, OR ANY OTHER UNUSUAL PAYMENT METHOD.

Always verify by looking up the company and contacting them directly.

DO NOT RELY ON INFORMATION PROVIDED TO YOU BY PHONE.

Once you have paid these scammers, there is usually no way to get your money back.

Stay safe and stay vigilant.
