Watauga County, NC – March 24th, 2025 – The Watauga County Fire Marshal has released the cause of the structure fire that destroyed six condo units at 105 Wedling Way, Beech Mountain on March 16th, 2025.
Incoming severe weather with a strong line of winds caused a failure in the metal roofing, which peeled up with the wind shear. The metal roofing wrapped a live power line, causing a charge to run through the structure and short out at a propane line, which ignited and accelerated the flames throughout the destroyed units.
National Weather Service lightning reports were used to determine that there were no lightning strikes near the area at the time of the fire.
