Multiple law enforcement agencies conduct checkpoint on Thursday evening

On Thursday evening, August 21st, the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with multiple local law enforcement agencies, conducted a DWI checkpoint on Old U.S. Highway 421 South in the Deep Gap community.

Participating agencies included the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, Appalachian State University Police Department, Blowing Rock Police Department, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Boone Police Department, and the DHHS BAT Mobile.

The checkpoint location was selected based on a review of alcohol-related crashes and impaired driving arrests in the area. Sgt. MacPherson with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office coordinated the joint enforcement effort.

During the operation:

• 2 individuals were charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI) and processed on the North Carolina DHHS BAT Mobile.

• 5 individuals under the age of 21 were charged with Driving After Consuming Alcohol.

• 1 Careless and Reckless Driving Charge

The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to our local law enforcement partners for their collaboration and to the community for their continued support and positive feedback regarding this event.
