Avery County Day of Remembrance & Honor to take place marking one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene

Avery County will come together on Saturday, September 27, at 10:00 a.m. at the Avery Square for a solemn yet uplifting Day of Remembrance & Honor, commemorating the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene.

The ceremony will serve as both a tribute and a reflection-remembering those we tragically lost, and are missing, while also honoring the countless heroes who rose to meet the challenges of the storm and its aftermath.

“Hurricane Helene left scars on our landscape and on our hearts,” said Avery County Manager Phillip Barrier. “But in the face of devastation, our community demonstrated what true resilience, compassion, and unity look like. This day is about remembrance, but also about gratitude and hope.”

The event will feature moments of silence, recognition of first responders and volunteers, and opportunities for the community to come together in reflection.

Attendees are invited to remember loved ones, honor the bravery of those who served, and celebrate the progress Avery County has made in rebuilding and moving forward.

As the county continues to heal and grow stronger, the Day of Remembrance & Honor stands as a reminder of the power of community spirit. Together, Avery County not only endured but carried one another through the darkest of days.
