NCDOT to Realign Old Shulls Mill Road at NC 105

BOONE – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor has begun a new phase of an intersection realignment in Watauga County.

Tri-County Paving LLC, of West Jefferson, earned the $1.7 million contract to realign the southern end of Old Shulls Mill Road to connect with N.C. 105 at a 90-degree angle. The realignment will improve safety by increasing sight distance for drivers turning onto N.C. 105 from Old Shulls Mill Road.

Crews started working on the embankment last month. The next part of the project involves working in active travel lanes to install new drainage infrastructure, connect the new alignment to existing lanes and restore driveway access to neighboring properties.

Flaggers will direct traffic as needed to ensure safety for workers and the traveling public.

The contract restricts work during morning and evening rush hour, on holidays and other times with unusually heavy traffic. The contract calls for the contractor to finish the project in late spring 2026.

Transportation officials encourage drivers to slow down and use caution in the work zone.
