Memorial Day Observations Around High Country

Memorial Day Weekend is coming with a number of special events scheduled around the High Country.

The Appalachian Theatre of the High Country honors Memorial Day with a concert featuring the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra on Friday night, May 26 at 7:30, performing their arrangements of patriotic numbers and favorite tunes from the Great American Songbook. Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for students and available online at AppTheatre.org.

The US Navy's Retired Vice Admiral Sean Prybus, a former commander of US Navy Seals, will speak at the Blowing Rock Memorial Day Service Saturday May 27, at 11 am at the gazebo in Blowing Rock's Memorial Park. Admiral Pybus was the Assault Squadron Commander of SEAL Team Six. The Blowing Rock Memorial Day program is sponsored by Blowing Rock American Legion Post 256 with the assistance of the Blowing Rock Civic Association. The Boone Moose Lodge will host a Pancake Breakfast on the morning of Memorial day Monday, 730 to 1030, at the Lodge at 607 Deerfield Road. Enjoy pancakes, eggs, bacon or sausage, coffee and orange juice for just $5, and veterans eat for free. Proceeds will go to the Watauga Disable American Veterans Chapter 90.

The Mount Lawn Cemetery Association (MLCA) will host its annual Memorial Day Remembrance Service on Monday, May 29, at 3:00 PM at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. The ROTC Honor Guard from Appalachian State University will present the colors, an opening prayer by Reverend Bud Russell. Captain Jim Fisher will share a brief inspirational message, and Chris Bertolini will close the ceremony with the playing of “Taps.” On Saturday, May 27, The High Country Military Officers Association of America will honor and remember deceased veterans of our community, with volunteers placing an American flag on the grave sites of 600 veterans buried at Mount Lawn.

The High Country Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, Boone Mall and the Watauga Community Band present the 15th annual Memorial Day Comemoration, Monday May 29, at 11 am. The morning will begin at 10:30 with a program of music from the Watauga Community Band, the program is at 11 am with the Watauga High School Marine Corps JROTC color guard, and the day's speaker, LTC Wes Young, US Army Retired, who is the senior instructor of Watauga JROTC, and a flag foldng ceremony by American Legion Post 130, recognition of veterans and their service, and more.

Avery County will hold its annual Memorial Day celebration on the Newland Square in downtown Newland Monday May 29, beginning at 2 pm. The program will feature remarks by Retired United States Army Sergeant Kevin Holden - Newland VFW District 15 and Post 4286-Newland Commander- and keynote speaker Cindy Stonebraker Reed, the Founding Director and Board Secretary for Mission: POW-MIA.
