5th Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk Hosted by the High Country Breast Cancer Foundation Coming Soon
The High Country Breast Cancer Foundation presents the 5th Anniversary 2022 5k Fun Run/Walk Saturday October 22, starting at the American Legion in Blowing Rock.
We spoke with Irene Sawyer, Founding member of the organization. She herself having survived an 11 year battle with breast cancer has given her a passion for those suffering through the same ordeal. It was her intention to start the High-Country Breast Cancer Foundation to achieve this goal. She noticed that this area did not have a run/walk in support of breast cancer, so she took it upon herself to start this organization to help a community in need. Sawyer says that she funds this entire operation herself. They provide grants and a means of finding the best quality of healthcare plans for women in the area. On of the things they have been able to finance is the Paxman Scalp Cooling system. What this machine does and while the patient is undergoing chemotherapy, they place a cap over there head which fills with freezing cold water. The goal of this is to freeze hair follicles allowing patients to keep their hair for as long as possible. Sawyer also stated that they provide things patients may need that aren't necessarily medically related. Things like Gas cards and food trains are just some of said services. The Fun Run/Walk will lead participants through Blowing Rock and to the Mayview area. You can go online and learn more and register at hcbcf.org.
