Fatal shooting of 5 People in Raleigh from the Department of Juvenile Justice
In response to a fatal shooting of five people in Raleigh on Thursday evening, and the subsequent apprehension of a juvenile suspect, Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Deputy Secretary William Lassiter issued the following statement: "The Department of Public Safety, Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, is supporting local law enforcement as they complete their investigation of this senseless act of violence in Raleigh.
A secure custody order has been issued for the juvenile suspect. "Under North Carolina state law, once a court determines probable cause exists, a juvenile who is 13 years of age or older who is charged with first degree murder will automatically be transferred to adult superior court." The North Carolina Department of Public Safety has made numerous state resources available in response to the active shooting incident in Raleigh yesterday. State Highway Patrol aviation and local patrol members, State Capitol Police Officers, and Alcohol Law Enforcement Special Agents have all responded and are assisting the Raleigh Police Department at this time.
