You are invited to discuss the future of the Overmountain Shelter

The U.S. Forest Service will hold a virtual meeting on January 25 to discuss the proposal for the future of the Overmountain Shelter, which has been closed since 2019.

The shelter, located in Avery County near the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, is structurally unsound and cannot be safely occupied. The proposal being considered is to decommission the shelter and pit privy and replace it with a 12'x12' covered picnic table area. The public can access a project website and submit comments on the proposal during the 20-day comment period starting January 23. The meeting will be held online through Microsoft Teams at 7 p.m. on January 25.
