Be warned about Phone Scammers

Residents of Watauga County are being warned of a scam involving electric service.

Scammers tell customers to pay their overdue electric bills with gift cards from stores like Walgreens and Circle K. The Watauga County Sheriff's Office has warned the public about this scam and advise people to hang up and call law enforcement immediately. New River Light & Power has also received several calls from customers regarding the scam. They remind customers that the only ways to pay their bills are through their office or through the customer portal, and NRLP would never call and instruct them to pay through a third party. Residents are encouraged to be aware of the scam and to contact the Watauga County Sheriff's Office or New River Light & Power with any questions or concerns.
